What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy (Rei is Universal and Ki is Life Energy). It is the vital force that flows through all matter and can be activated for a powerful form of healing called Reiki. Reiki is in no way a faith system, all that is required is the willingness to heal and be healed. Reiki (ray-key) is a natural healing technique that feels like a flow of a high frequency of energy into and through a practitioner, and out the hands into another person.
Thought to have originated thousands of years ago, Reiki was re-discovered by Mikao Usui, a Japanese man around 1914. Reiki is a generic Japanese compound word which has the general case meaning of "healing". Rei means "Universal" or "Spiritual", and Ki is "Life Force Energy". Most westerners take Reiki to mean "Universal Life Force Energy".
However, whilst it is this energy that is used during Reiki Healing, the actual methodology employed is known as the Usui Natural Healing System (sometimes written as Usui Shiki Ryoho) from the name of the individual who developed the healing system that uses Reiki energy. In a Reiki Healing session, the practitioner places his or her hands onto the patients body at a number of strategic points.
The patient almost always feels the energy begin to flow into them, either as a heat, a coldness, or a strange "flow" through their body, often in places remote from the point at which the practitioner has their hands. Reiki is said to "know" where it is needed, and flows to the point where it can do most good. Reiki practitioners are said to be "attuned" to the Reiki energy, and develop their abilities in conformance with Usui's original system.
The development of a practitioner is graded into three degrees. Reiki healing is suitable for any age, along with pets and even plants! There are many cases on record of almost miraculous cures with this ancient healing system, which conventional medicine has failed to even touch.
How does it work?
The Reiki Therapist channels the life energy of Lifeforce as it is more usually called, through his or her hands into the patients body, thereby enhancing the body's own natural ability to heal itself. Reiki works on all levels of a person's being, thereby reaching the cause as well as the physical symptoms.
Reiki is an amazing energy that comes from the highest spiritual source. It has its own intelligence and knows exactly where to go and what to do. It is multi-dimensional and will heal the cause of a problem on whatever level it may exist - body, mind, or spirit. It does not have to be directed by the practitioner. Because it is a channeled healing, the Reiki practitioner's energies are never depleted.
An Analogy
Consider whenever a person goes outside to water the garden. They turn on the tap, pick up the hose and focus the nozzle of the hose towards the garden. The person isn't usually concerned with the water running out, nor with the possibility of anything foreign coming in through the sides of the hose.
The person also doesn't worry about anything coming back up through the nozzle as the water pressure is too strong. While this person could just let the water run and it would work its way to all parts of the garden, they like to direct the water to their favourite plants, then possibly the balance of the garden. However, if there is a part that is much drier than the rest of the garden, the water will accumulate more here, so as to balance the entire garden's water content. And it is usally quite obvious where these spots are, as more water gets absorbed here, than elsewhere. The water can be thought of as the Reiki energy.
It comes from an outside source, and seems to have no limit to its availability. The person is the Reiki practitioner. The hose is like the purified Reiki channel that is opened within the initiated Reiki practitoner. It is very pure and strong and nothing can penetrate it. The energy flows out the palms of their hands, their nozzles (as well as other chakras in the body), and the recipient's energy does not flow back into the practitioner (so they don't take on their mis-qualified energy).
The Reiki practitioner can just stay in one place projecting the energy on or towards the person who is receiving it, but typically moves around the body, starting with the recipient's head (just like watering the favourite flowers first). While the Reiki energy fills and surrounds the recipient's body with its gentle vibrations, if there are parts that require more balancing of energy (called energy blocks),the Reiki energy will focus more in those places.
The potential end result is a balancing of all the energy in the body. The Reiki channel can also be thought of being similar to a sprinkler hose with little holes all around the sides of it. Like the sprinkler hose, the Reiki also "leaks" out into the Reiki practitioner, causing her/him to receive a gentle Reiki session also. The result of this latter fact is that the Reiki practitioner feels energized and vibrant after giving a Reiki session, and is quite capable of performing several sessions in a row.
